Once upon a time I was sitting on my favourite bench, in my much loved allotment. The sun was warm on my face and the hum of the bees on the blackberries made me feel quite sleepy. The air was still and I could feel my eyes beginning to close when I heard a very quiet, almost silent whisper from the dried grass.
Opening my eyes but staying very still I looked towards the sound and there in the grass, underneath the blackberries was a little brown mouse. His furry little ears protected his face from the prickles of the blackberry thorns and like mine, his eyes were almost closed. Binky Mouse was enjoying the sunshine as much as I was.
Scarcely daring to breathe in case I disturbed him I watched the little creature. He was alone but he seemed to have a happy smile on his face and I thought maybe he was on his way to visit his best friend and he was smiling in anticipation. After a few minutes Binky Mouse twitched his whiskers and scampered off, weaving his way through the beans on my allotment. He had a little nibble at a big cabbage on the way past and said a merry “hello” to Mr Pig and Tom Kitten who were snoozing in the sunshine too.
As he disappeared I imagined him meeting his friend, Blot, and wondered what they´d be doing together on this lovely day. I picked up my pen and began to write…
